Advanced training program (ATP)
Age level: 11 years and older
Cost: $350 for Friday, Saturday & Sunday OR $250 for Saturdays only
This program is meant to build off skills developed in the BTP or other racing programs, with the expectation that at this age the athlete should make a greater commitment to training and skills development. The athlete should begin forming specific goals of what they want to achieve in skiing, and then use the program to develop the discipline and skills to help attain them. As many resources as possible are made available to the athlete to aid them in their development and quest to succeed. The amount of training offered in this program and contact time with the coaches is greater than in the BTP, which is reflected in the increased program cost.Athletes train at Skiland for 4-5 hours each Saturday and Sunday, and have additional training opportunity at the Birch Hill Ski Area Friday evenings. Training will begin as soon as each ski area opens for the season. Club races are held every other Saturday at Skiland beginning in February. Athletes in this program are encouraged to travel with the club and participate in competitions held in Juneau and Alyeska, and to participate in summer race camps. FASC offers a summer training camp in Austria. A dryland training program is offered each fall, and is essential for the serious athlete in preparing physically and mentally for the coming season. (Please see the Events - Calendar page on the FASC website for current race and other event dates.) Equipment choices at this level of skiing are a bit more confusing and should be discussed with FASC coaches. By age 13, the athlete should have skis specific for slalom and for giant slalom. Proper size is important and is determined by a combination of skier weight, height, ability, and restrictions mandated by USSA or FIS. Equipment discounts are available to club members through Beaver Sports. This information is sent to club members each fall. The FASC website (www.fairbanksalpine.org) Forum can be a useful place to buy and sell used equipment. Membership in the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) as a Youth Competitor or Alpine Competitor is required. Membership forms may be downloaded from the USSA website (www.ussa.org).
